A useful strategy is to explore the reasons you have for wanting to cut down:
What have I noticed about my drinking that bothers me?
What makes me think that I should do something about it now?
You may also find it helpful to keep a record of:
How much you are drinking
What happens when you drink
How you feel as a result of a drinking session
Maybe you have thought about cutting down:
So I want to cut down ... how do I start to do that?
Think about what you could do, and how you want to handle it. It is up to you to decide what is best at this point and to come up with your own strategies.
Setting your goal
Its important to think of something that is:
Realistic - you can do it for one week
Meaningful to you
Will it impact on your physical, mental or spiritual or family wellbeing
How important is it for you to achieve your goal?
How confident are you?
What personal strengths will you draw on?
Who will help you achieve your gaol?
What will be the things that get in the way? - Identify what triggers you to take risks with your alcohol use, consider what will be the consequences.
Look at various options to change (eating before you go out, setting a limit on how much you will drink), pick one that is realistic.
What are the things that will help you?
Have a back up plan in place.
