<STRONG>Council</STRONG><BR><BR>ALAC is governed by an eight member Council appointed by the Minister responsible for ALAC. Members are appointed for a three year term and may be reappointed. The Council meets every six weeks to ensure we are meeting our <A href="http://www.alac.org.nz/CorporateReports.aspx" target=_blank>strategic and business objectives</A>.

Peter Glensor (Chair)
Appointed as Chairman – 1 January 2007
Term due to expire 31 December 2009.

Peter Glensor is an elected member and current Chair of Hutt Valley District Health Board, and an elected member of the Greater Wellington Regional Council – where he is the Council’s Deputy Chair, and Chairs its Transport and Access Committee. He is Chair of the National Board of District Health Boards NZ.  He is a member of the Advisory Committee for the Study of the NZ Non-Profit Sector, and of the Editorial Board of the Australian Journal of Primary Health.  He has extensive governance experience and knowledge of the health sector.  Until recently he was a member of the NZ Drug Foundation Board, and Chair of Wesley Community Action.  He was also co-chair of the Community Sector Taskforce and a member of the Ministry of Health's PHO Community Council, and New Prescribers' Committee.  He has held a number of other positions including National Coordinator, Health Care Aotearoa; and was a Hutt City Councillor.


Trevor Shailer (Deputy Chair)
Appointed to the Council – 1 April 2005
Reappointed – 5 May 2008
Appointed Deputy Chair – 1 April 2008
Term due to expire 5 May 2011.

Trevor is a Partner in GSL Network, a New Zealand owned and operated advertising agency that specialises in public information campaigns. He is on the board of Jigsaw Board (National advocate for child abuse prevention) and the New Zealand Mäori Rugby League. Trevor has a background in public health, communications and is actively involved in Maori development. He also has a sporting background having competed in boxing at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games and the 1994 Commonwealth games - Trevor is also an adviser to the NZ Olympic Committee.


Anne Hobby
Appointed to Council – 26 November 2007
Term due to expire 25 November 2010.

Anne is the Manager of Te Rapuora O Te Waiharakeke Health Services, the first Maori Health provider to be set up in the South Island. Te Rapuora delivers contracted services to MSD, MOH, NMDHB and other organisations across a range of youth, disability, addiction and mental health areas using both current and traditional methods. She has a nursing and public health background and is an active board member for Kimi Hauora Wairau, Marlborough PHO, and is also a member of the Nelson Marlborough DHB Mäori Health Reference Group. Anne has extensive knowledge of the not-for-profit sector and a passion for ensuring Tangata Whenua have full access to the services they require to participate fully in our community.


Gavin McFadyen
Reappointed to Council – 14 December 2007
Term due to expire 13 December 2010.

Gavin McFadyen is a former Assistant Commissioner for Operations in the New Zealand Police. He held many positions within the Police including the role of spokesperson on alcohol-related issues. Since 2004 Gavin has been consulting with and providing specialist advice to a number of organisations including the NZRU and Rugby NZ 2011 (World Cup). His international assignments have included a recent appointment (2008) as a Commissioner on the Inquiry in to the post Election Violence in Kenya.


Papa’ali’i Dr Kim Ma’ia’i
Appointed to Council – 25 July 2008
Term due to expire 24 July 2011.

Dr Kim Maiai is a registered medical practitioner & a Fellow of the Royal NZ College of General Practitioners. He is the Director of Student Health Services at the University of Otago, a large multidisciplinary primary health organisation with a focus on key areas of youth health, including education & harm mitigation in the use of drugs and alcohol. He is chair of the Dunedin Urgent Doctors & Accident Centre and has had a leadership role in the development of afterhours primary care services to metropolitan Dunedin.


Dr Helen Moriarty
Appointed to Council – 26 November 2007
Term due to expire 25 November 2010.

Helen Moriarty is a registered medical practitioner and both a fellow of the Royal New Zealand College of GPs and fellow of the Australasian Chapter of Addiction Medicine of the Royal Australian College of Physicians (RACP). Dr Moriarty is a member of the Multi-region Ethics Committee, the Expert Advisory Committee on Drugs for the Ministry of Health, Expert Advisory Committee –Action Plan on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder for the Ministry of Health, and E-Health Committee of the RACP. Dr Moriarty is an occasional Medical Advisor to the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners, the NZ College of Midwives, the NZ College of Pharmacists and the office of HDC. She is a New Zealand representative on the Chapter Addiction Medicine Education Committee of the RACP, and of the National Services Framework Technical Group in Mental Health & Addictions Sector for the Ministry of Health. She is also employed by the University of Otago and the Wellington School of Medicine and Health Sciences, teaching and researching addictions medicine.


Robyn Northey
Appointed to Council – 1 January 2007
Term due to expire 31 December 2009.

Robyn Northey is a former School Dental Nurse with general and project management experience, who has broad knowledge and involvement in the health and not-for-profit sectors. She is currently Trustee of the Hope Foundation (age care research and education), and a Council member of Age Concern, and operates a consultancy business in the health and social services sector. She is a member of Northern X Regional Ethics Committee. She has held many positions in the health sector including: Chief Executive Officer Caughey Preston Rest Home and Hospital (1999-2004); Aged Care Planning and Development Consultant Metlifecare Ltd (1998-1999); General Manager Disability Support Services Northern Regional Health Authority (North Health) (1992 – 1998); and Manager Community Programmes and Principal Social Worker, North Harbour Health District Auckland Area Health Board (1988-1990).


Alick Shaw
Appointed to Council – 1 January 2007
Term due to expire 31 December 2009.

Alick Shaw is chair of the NZ School of Music, and deputy chair of the Arts Council of Creative New Zealand. He serves on the boards of the NZ Transport Agency, the Wellington Regional Health and Hospitals Foundation and the Nikau Foundation. He was Deputy Mayor of Wellington from 2001 to 2007 and was first elected to the Wellington City Council in 1998. Previous Board appointments include: Chair Wellington Sinfonia Orchestra, Wellington Water Management Ltd., Embassy Theatre Trust; Wellington Museums’ Trust; and Wellington Shakers Netball Franchise. Mr Shaw has backgrounds in the hospitality industry and industrial relations.
